Basic Cross Bookmark

This is the cross pattern I came up with for Father's day. It's a very basic cross pattern with nothing special going on, so it's a perfect project for someone who is new to crochet thread! This pattern is going to be more graphic than written, so hopefully these pictures make it clear what you need to do.

**Pattern Note: I will be referring to what I call a "v-shell" throughout the pattern because it's just a lot simpler to say that than tell you over and over again what I'm actually doing. A v-shell for this pattern will mean (chain 3, 3 dc, chain 3, 4 dc).

Chain 5, make a ring by slip stitching into the first chain.

(Chain 3, 3 dc, chain 3)

(4 dc, chain 3) 3 times

Slip stitch to original chain 3.

Work v-shell

Chain 3, turn (This is where the pattern gets a bit tricky if you're a purist crocheter. I don't personally see the need to slip stitch up the side of the v-shell to get to the center when I can just do it this way. You are more than welcome to do it either way.)

Sc in middle of v-shell

Work another v-shell

Chain 3, sc in middle of v-shell, work another v-shell

Chain 3, sc in middle, work another v-shell

Chain 3, sc in middle, work another v-shell. Finish off.

Join to next corner of starting square, work another 4 v-shells just as before.

Finish off.

Move to next corner of square, work 4 more v-shells. Finish off.

Join in last corner and work 9 v-shells, DON'T finish off.

Chain 1, do not turn

do 3 sc in first dc of last v-shell, then 1 sc in next 3 dc

do 3 dc in middle space of v-shell

Sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in last dc

(Chain 3, sc in corner of next v-shell) down the side and all the way around

When you make it to the corners, however, don't chain 3 between the v-shells

just sc in next shell, then continue with chain 3, sc up side

work next corner and the remaining corners in the same way as before.

continue on as before.

Slip stitch to original sc.

ch 1, do 3 dc in first dc of previous round, sc to middle, do 3 sc, sc to next corner, 3 sc in last sc,

do 3 sc on top of chain 3 space and all ch 3 spaces around

work corners as before with 3 sc in first sc, sc to tip, 3 sc in tip, sc to end, do 3 sc in last space, then continue on with 3 sc in each chain 3 space all the way around cross.

Slip stitch to original sc, finish off.
